By Raakhee Mirchandani for Elle Magazine
Though I experienced a great deal of worry and frustration when I was arrested, I expected that everything would work out. I thought people would see I had no reason to kill Hae, and certainly there could be no evidence to say I did. I had complete faith that I would never be held responsible for a crime I did not commit. But by the end of the year, the exact opposite happened. It seemed everyone thought I had reason to kill Hae, and there was hard evidence to prove I did.
Even if you've been living under a rock, it's hard not to recognize the voice above. It belongs to Adnan Syed, the protagonist and center of the groundbreaking podcast "Serial." The passage is taken from a letter written from prison, and it appears in a new book, Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial, which will be published next week. The book is the product of the lifelong relationship between Adnan Syed and his friend and advocate Rabia Chaudry.
